Conference Executive Secretaries/Speaker
As we move through the transition from presbyteries and
Conferences to a regional council system, people have been wondering what will
happen with grants that some presbyteries and some Conferences have been giving
to ministries within their jurisdiction.
Following discussion with the current Executive
Secretaries/Speaker, a process was developed that will combine the current
system with the new one. Here’s what it will look like:
- Presbyteries and
Conferences will contact current or potential grant recipients in the
- The following form will
be used for all grant applications. See MSG-revised” in the “Grant
Applications” section at http://www.united-church.ca/forms.
- All applications except
#4, below, will be returned to the Conference offices by August 31.
- Applications from
Indigenous ministries will be sent directly to Stephanie Strachan at email@example.com in
the Aboriginal Ministries Council by August 31. Please let Stephanie
know which Indigenous ministries you have contacted in case she needs to
follow up with them directly.
- Applications will be
forwarded to the Executive Ministers of the regional councils to be
considered by a transitional commission which will have authority to make
the grant decisions for 2019. GC43 is being requested to appoint the
commission to make decisions prior to the regional council’s governing
structure being elected in early 2019.
- Presbyteries are invited
to offer an opinion/recommendation on each application by October 31.
What is different:
- The application form deals with both General Council
mission support grants and grants given by presbyteries and Conferences
from other funds; the form is meant for 2019 only; regional councils will
determine whether to use this form in subsequent years or develop an
entirely new process.
- Grants will come from Mission & Service givings,
not money received through the national assessment. Each regional
council will receive a grant meant for a variety of mission and ministry
activities within the regional council.
- If presbyteries or Conferences have earmarked funds for
the grant applicants, they are asked to advise the commission by September
30 to assist with financial preparation for the granting process.
is clearly a transitional time for the church; thanks for your part in making
the change go as smoothly as possible.
